SMART TECHNOLOGIES

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Summary of Role

During my summer internship with SMART Technologies, I supported mechanical engineering projects across design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing documentation. I worked with the engineering team to develop and detail components used in larger product assemblies, creating CAD models and technical drawings for both internal use and external manufacturers.

A significant portion of my work involved preparing detailed part and assembly drawings for manufacturing, including large assembly drawings that communicated component relationships, dimensions, and design requirements. I also designed smaller mechanical components for integration into existing assemblies and developed prototype enclosures for various components by adapting and improving upon previous designs. Additionally, I identified a design omission during product review prior to release.

I contributed to the team's prototyping and additive manufacturing activities by preparing and producing 3D-printed prototype components. While the team's primary 3D-printing specialist was away, I took responsibility for managing 3D-printing requests and producing parts for ongoing engineering projects. I also helped assemble prototype systems that combined 3D-printed and other manufactured components.

In addition to design work, I supported product testing and validation. I conducted comparative testing of new and existing SMART Board pens using established company testing protocols, analyzed the results, and prepared a technical report documenting my findings and comparisons for the engineering team.

Throughout the internship, I participated in engineering and company meetings, gaining exposure to the broader product-development process and collaborating with engineers across different stages of design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing.

What I Worked On:

  • Mechanical Design & SolidWorks: Designed mechanical components and prototype enclosures for integration into larger product assemblies.

  • Manufacturing Documentation: Produced detailed part and assembly drawings, including exploded views and BOM-related documentation for manufacturers.

  • SMART SoundFlow Preliminary Build: Created a major assembly drawing for the SMART SoundFlow audio broadcasting system that was used to support a preliminary product build.

  • Prototyping & Additive Manufacturing: Produced prototype parts using 3D printing and Digital ABS materials and helped assemble components into functional prototypes.

  • 3D Printing Responsibility: Managed ongoing 3D-printing and prototype-part production while the team's primary additive-manufacturing specialist was away.

  • Testing & Validation: Conducted protocol-based comparative testing of SMART Board pens and prepared a technical report whose findings prompted re-evaluation of the adhesive used in the pen design.

  • Product Development: Worked across design, detailing, prototyping, manufacturing preparation, physical assembly, and product testing.
